This event made Fort Sumner more secure and gave rise to the name "The Castle of Apache Tears" for it. In 1886, a railroad was built through this area making it easier for settlers to access resources such as woolen goods and coal from mines in nearby Colorado City. As a result of this development, many people moved into Portales during the late 19th century including several Major League Baseball players who played there including Tom Seaver (1915-1996), Al Simmons (1920-2007), Hoyt Wilhelm (1920-2006) and Don Sutton (1925-2007). In 1925, United States President Coolidge dedicated what is now known as Coolidge Park in honor of Secretary of Agriculture Charles Evans Hughes who had visited Portales earlier that year to promote American agriculture interests in central New Mexico Territory which included parts of today's Albuquerque County as well as portions of Santa Fe County east of Interstate 20/US 66. On December 12, 1931 a tornado touched down just northwest of town injuring four people before dissipating over open country about 10 miles southeast of town center; damage estimates varied from $1 million to $10 million according to reports at the time (). A second tornado struck two weeks later causing more extensive damage northeast of town center with fires seen up to 1 mile into buildings.. On May 30th 1935 a magnitude 7 earthquake occurred centering near present day Pecos Junction killing nine people along with serious injuries resulting from falling objects () . The quake injured over 50 people when buildings collapsed or walls weakened due to stress caused by the vibration alone (). A large oil field owned by Standard Oil Company began construction close to where today's plaza stands providing work opportunities for locals during these years but production stopped abruptly around 1960 due primarilyto environmental concerns surrounding an adjacent silver mine operated by Enron Corporation (). A post office opened at Portales on November 8th 1912 under auspices Of The Episcopal Church with mail being carried between towns within New Mexico Territory until 1959 when all mail was transferred statewide under one system administered by NM State Highway Department.; thenceforth all mail must be delivered via Statutory Mail Route #2 which runs parallel & southward from downtown Albuquerque across I-25 into southern Santa Fe County

In 1860, Drury & Co., one of the largest mercantile organizations in New Mexico at that time, constructed an extensive building complex near the present-day football stadium; this structure still stands today).
