Portales is a town in New Mexico, United States. The population was 7,545 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Taos County. The first contact between the indigenous nations and Spanish colonists took place in what is now Portales on September 10, 1540 when Hernán Cortés and his force arrived there from Santa Fe to establish a new Mexican colony. The area that would become Portales was first settled by Mescalero people who were peaceful hunters and gatherers who hunted game in open areas near the river Pecos. Over time, other Native American groups also invaded and occupied this area including the Navajo, Apache, Kiowa and Comanche. In 1875, after years of negotiation between Hopi Indians and U.S., Mexican authorities transferred ownership of about 4 square miles (10 km²) in what became known as Rancho San Miguel to John Wesley Powell for development as an oil field with access to White Sands Missile Range within easy driving distance. This was one of many such transactions that led to New Mexico's annexation by the US during the 1880s as part of Manifest Destiny policy which aimed to expand US territory westward across America under US control. In 1902, following passage of Arizona statehood Act by Congress, New Mexico joined Arizona along with nine other Deep South states which gained statehood on January 16th 1912 when President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation creating them as territories). The town had its beginning around 1860 when settlers began arriving from Texas looking for land grants following the Texas Revolution war efforts against Spanish rule in that region. A group led by Captain David Hackett built a small fort at present day Portal de las Americas while others established outposts at present-day Ojo Caliente (on Nowata Creek), Atascosa (near Presentation Hill), Carlsbad (now Roswell), Arenas Grande (now Raton) and El Paso del Norte before finally settling permanently at what is now Portales on April 25th 1861 under military occupation by General Antonio López de Santa Anna’s Army during portions of the American Civil War due to mining operations being conducted nearby on behalf of Confederate forces seeking coal supplies not too far from Fort Worth Ferry Landing where troops disembarked for their march northward towards Central Texas along newly created Trans-Pecos Road providing transportation overland across hostile Indian Territory Occupied By The Sioux To secure enough food stocks for winter months should they ever encounter European forces again east of buffalo country any time soon! Captain Hackett’s original post served only until 1862 when he relocated his family to what is today downtown Portales – then known as “Hackett’s Corners” - because there was no store or water source available closer than 3 miles away from where they lived apart from local farmers who provided goods and services necessary for their subsistence farming lifestyle until well into 1920s! By 1865 however, most residents had moved out West due various reasons including expanding cattle produceries located outside Rotonda Woolen Mill & Market just south of town limits; gold discoveries discovered along Monument Valley Rim northeast/southwest of town; increasing tensions with neighboring towns over rights to shared resources etc.; hostilities ensuing between rival factions vying for control over key intersections leading up to Lincoln County purchase in 1867 compelling most residents within 1 ½ miles radius either inside or adjacent ranch homes concentrated their activities more toward horseback riding & trading ceremonies held annually at Wichita Hills Agency some two days travel southwestaddle southeastbound journeying through scrubby oak forest home stretch reaching full swing late afternoon circa mid-May1867!) Thereafter continued developmental activity centered around religion – primarily Methodist Episcopal Church organized 1886; Masonic lodge #2 founded 1888; Presbyterian church organized 1889; First Baptist church organized 1890 then later Junction Baptist Church 1895 becoming modern dayPortales United Methodist Church 1899; Catholic church organization 1893 followed by current Cathedral Basilica Diocese Of Albuquerque 1960). Eventually housing developments sprung up surrounding modern day downtown: Sockman Residence Company 1909-1911 becomingSnapshot condominium 1912-14 then eventually Loopdevelopment Homes 1915-17 becomingLoop development 1999-. Today's downtown core still largely retains those early pioneer influences remaining largely unchanged since 1860!
The town of Portales was founded in 1847 by José María Cámpora, who named it after his father, Don José de Portales. The first post office was established in 1851. By 1865, the population had grown to over 1,000 people and the town became a small railroad center. In 1907, the Northern Pacific Railroad built a line from Albuquerque to Portales and began freight service. In 1916, the Railroad added a branch from Paso Robles toPortales. The town's fortunes changed in the late 1920s when oilaki drilling operations began near Portales and soon local businesses were booming with new jobs available for men and women alike. However, this prosperity didn't last; within a few years oilaki production had essentially stopped and the economy started to decline. A large part of the reason for this decline was due to an industry-wide recession that hit New Mexico hard during this time period; many companies went out of business or lost their licenses. However, one company that pulled through was Anadarko Petroleum Corporation which bought several local businesses including those in portaledesignation (the naming rights to many downtown streets). This gave Anadarko control over much of what used to be local commerce while also creating new opportunities for employees as well as customers. As a result, there has been a recent resurgence in activity around town although some concerns remain about possible future impacts from shale gas development nearby
