The history of firearms in Portales, New Mexico can be traced back to the early 1800s. The area was originally populated by Native Americans and the first recorded reference to arms and armor being used in this region comes from a treaty between the Spanish and Pueblo peoples in 1821. At that time, the town of Portales was known as Acoma. It is interesting to note that both Acoma and Portales were named for mountains in New Mexico – Acoma for Mount Santa Fe, while Portales was located at the foot of nearbyescalada mountain. Portales began to grow rapidly after it became an important stop on the San Antonio-Mexico Road during the 19th century. ThisIncreased trade caused several businesses to open up and portaux (town square) began to become a popular spot for socializing and shopping. In 1875,circumstances led to a gun battle taking place inportaux which left six people dead and four injured. The fight is now considered one of the most infamous incidents involving firearms inNew Mexico. subsequent years saw growth withinthe community with various businesses opening up, but also some negative events that affected residents including arson attacks, suicides,and even homicides associated with shootings sports matches or hunting trips across town . Eventually community members came togetherto come up with a plan to prevent these issues from happening by creating regulations regardingfirearm ownership , usage , transportation,, etc., which has continued into present day . The portales community has a rich history with firearms. In 1869, the first gun store in the community was opened by John T. Hewitt. The store continued to be successful until it closed in 1934. In 1937, Edsel Ford opened a garage adjacent to the old Hewitt Store and began selling rifles and shotguns. The following year, he added handguns to his inventory. In 1941, Portales’ first post office was established and mail service from Albuquerque was available through the store. In 1944, another garage was built on South First Street and hunting rifles were also sold there. In 1946-1947, Edsel Ford died and his son Harry became involved in the business. After Harry’s death in 1951, his widow ran the business until her death in 1984. From then on, it passed through three generations of family ownership before being bought by a company that operates it today

Portales, New Mexico is a small town located in the Mexican state of Durango. The town was founded on January 24, 1847 by José María Portales and his wife Juana de la Cruz. In 1860, it became part of the newly formed State of Durango. On July 1, 1912, it became a municipality within the new state of Chihuahua. In 1968, it re-joined the Mexican state of Durango as part of the Federal District. As a result of its close proximity to Mexico City and Chihuahua City, Portales has played an important role in both countries' history. The first Europeans to arrive in this area were Spanish Conquistadors who were looking for land to colonize after their campaigns against Apache Indians in 1760-1765. Captain Francisco Vázquez de Coronado discovered what would become Portales during his trip through this region on October 6th, 1519 while searching for a route to Santa Fe. He named the place San Diego del Norte because he thought that there may be some ships anchored at that location waiting to transport goods between Mexico and Spanish California ( today's Arizona ). At first there were only scattered Indian villages here but by 1847 there were over seventy families living here with about twenty five hundred head of cattle and two thousand head of sheep which are still present today although outnumbered by more recent arrivals from neighboring states such as Texas . Most residents worked on ranching or mining operations which supplemented their subsistence farming economy until well into the late 19th century when leather production replaced sheep raising as the mainstay economic activity in this area In 1861 Hector González sold rights to what is now downtown Portales for $500 to Pío Pico who designated it as his future capital city . It wasn't until 1865 when Juan Bautista Quirós donated land along San Miguel Creek east of where Main Street now stands for a square called Plaza Mayor . This square was home to general stores , churches and other important local infrastructure before being used as pastureland for several years until finally becoming residential property following départementalization As portalinges grew closer to Mexico City via railroads they became an ever increasing target for bandits who robbed travelers en route including one instance where three passengers were kidnapped and held ransom near Monterrey In 1887 Manuel Aguilar y Gasca offered 5 lots totaling 20 acres adjacent to what is now Paseo de la Reforma Avenue between 2nd Street and 3rd Street westwardly across from La Merced Church - all currently occupied by businesses including Aveda Cosmetics
Portales was founded in 1858 by Manuel de la Cruz and his wife, Maria. The town first grew as a cattle ranching and trading center, but soon became an agricultural center with cotton and other crops. In the 1920s, Portales became home to the New Mexico School of Mines and Technology.
