In 1836 José María Ortiz y Arroyo sold land east of present day Portales to General Antonio López de Santa Anna and began construction on what would become the Alta California National Monument. After years of struggle by local civilian and military leaders, including San Miguel County Sheriff Manuel Diaz and cavalry colonel Ulysses S Grant, Los Angeles Mexican War veteran Captain John Corderoy built a stockade around the fortifications in 1865 to prevent Native American raids into southern New Mexico Territory. On July 25th1866 Apache Chief Gerónimo attacked Chaco Canyon while supplies were being unloaded from wagons at Fort Armijo; after nightfall most of the garrison surrendered with twenty-four dead including twelve soldiers and three civilians. The remaining troops proceeded to burn all but two miles (3 km) of rifle range inside Chaco Canyon before withdrawing back into Chaco Canyon itself about 9 am September 17th 1870 because news arrived from Tucson that President Grover Cleveland had re-elected Abraham Lincoln
