Portales is a small town in the US state of New Mexico. The population was 1,714 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque–Taos Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a trading post on the Pecos River in 1847 by General Antonio Armijo and his son Captain Francisco Armijo. The first store was built by José de la Torre y Ulloa in 1851, and it became a city in 1907 with the incorporation of Portales proper into Albuquerque. Until around 1912, Portales was an agricultural center; today its economy Mostlybased on ranching and manufacturing such as textiles, flour, cheese, cigarettes and automobiles. In 1916-1920 Portales had 5 schools; now there are only 2 functioning schools: one for students entering grades 3-8 (grades 9-12 exist concurrently) and one for pre-kindergarten through 8th grade (grades 9-12 also operate concurrently). From 1941 to 1951 over 100 businesses were located here including 30 banks & 20 stores; now there are only 6 businesses still active: four ranchers' meat packing plants (& their feed barns), four cotton ginners', two machine shops & two shoe factories

Portales is a small town in New Mexico. The population was 711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area. The first European to visit Portales was Father José de la Torre, who traveled there in 1810 on his way to Santa Fe. In 1812, Antonio Cordero and Manuel Micheltorena founded a mission here known as San Francisco Xavier (St Francis Xavier). In 1824, Governor Manuel García Moreno y Otero established the Presidio of Albuquerque with its own militia and landowning elites. The presidio functioned as an important military post until it was surrendered by New Mexico in 1863 to Mexican American Generalísimo Abascal. In 1865, after negotiations between U.S. General James Fenton and Mexican President Porfirio Díaz, New Mexicans received land grants that included Portales Township in southeastern New Mexico Territory. The community of Portales sprang up around this new rural settlement; initial growth came from agriculture but later industry developed as well including shipbuilding and manufacturing plants along the Rio Grande River Valley near present-day Albuquerque and Hollis AFB Airport east of town. By 1970, portale's population had grown to 1,953 residents; during that decade some major changes took place within the community: First were increased numbers of Hispanic Americans moving into the town due to better economic opportunities following kickbacks associated with oil exploration under Bureau of Land Management jurisdiction; second were growing protests against government corruption which led to several high-profile arrests including that of Mayor Gilberto "Paco" Valdez; third were changes wrought by global recession which hitportale hard with jobs scarce and prices for basic items such as food doubling or tripling overnight among others; fourth were revisions made to zoning regulations governing industrial use which opened up much more acreage for commercial development generating significant job growth for many years thereafter culminating in 2006 when all but one majoroil refinery closed down in state resulting in dramatic decreases seen across most key industries not just portale's economy
Portales was founded in 1847 by José Antonio Portales and his wife, María del Carmen. It was named after Captain Juan de Portales who explored the area in 1786. The town became a part of Albuquerque in 1912.
