Portales, New Mexico is a small town in the US state of New Mexico. It was founded by Spanish colonists in 1781 as part of Rancho de las Vegas. The first school opened its doors on December 3, 1870; it was operated by Mrs Jane Parkhurst and her daughter Mary Dibblett until 1883 when it became a school run by local citizens under the leadership of Mr James Wetherington until 1898 when he died suddenly at age 70%. In 1924, an irrigation canal connecting Newton Creek with Santa Fe allowed farmers to start growing corn and other crops near Portales proper for export to Albuquerque. This led to increased trade through townspeople for goods not only from their own homes but also from nearby Santa Fe and Albuquerque markets. It wasn't until 1942 that what is now downtownPortales began being developed as a commercial center with banks and businesses opening up between then and 1945 when most of the residential development took place around what is now Main Street/. In 1951 new dirt roads were built leading into town which made access easier for outsiders such as truckers bringing supplies or tourists visiting San Miguel County while still allowing residents access their homes without having to leave their properties
In 1821, the United States purchased land in what is now Portales, New Mexico from the Mexican government. The town was founded in 1824 by John C. Fremont and his brother-in-law Jose Maria Rios as a trading post on the route between Santa Fe and Los Angeles. The post was abandoned in 1826 because of navigation problems caused by rapids in the Rio Grande. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s due to its location near two important trade routes, one through Santa Fe and the other through Los Angeles. In 1832, when San Diego became a city, Portales became an administrative center for both cities. The first school was built inPortales in 1834. During the 1840s, portales developed into a major commercial center with several stores and businesses including an insurance company, warehouses, and a grain elevator. In 1850, Portales hosted the Centennial Exposition which showcased American culture to Mexicans living abroad. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna moved his army from Tucson to Fort Arizona to attack Albuquerque before moving on to Las Cruces. While at Alvarado Barracks across from Fort Apache Indian Reservation he ordered all women and children within ten miles of Fort Carson (now known as Deming) be deported without any lawyers or food or shelter available to them while they were away; this order led to large numbers of people starving inside Fort Carson over winter while trying to escape back home. A group of men under Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Prentiss organized a defense against Palo Alto Native Americans who had raided nearby rancherías looking for food stores that winter; this action helped prevent large-scale starvation inside fort Carson that would have otherwise occurred had it not been for Prentiss' efforts After America's victory over Mexico at Texan Independence Day on July 14th 1865 President Abraham Lincoln issued Proclamation No 745 which read "All persons arrested or detained as enemies of our country are hereby discharged without cost." This proclamation ended Reconstructionism within U SMexico and allowed many exiles returned home including many Mormons who had been living west of Salt Lake City since Mormon Battalion troops arrived there during Brigham Young's invasion of Utah in 1847
