Portales, New Mexico is a small town in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. It is located on the eastern edge of the Sierra Madre mountain range, about 25 miles east of Ciudad Juárez and 30 miles northeast of Chihuahua City. The population was 2,512 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Portales were Spanish missionaries in 1540. The area that became Portales was part of the Huasteca region until 1824 when it became part of Mexico City. After independence from Spain, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla founded a company called “Fuerte de Santa María” (Forty Mary) to protect trade routes between Baja California and Tehuantepec in present-day Chihuahua and Puebla states. In 1847 Manuel Micheltorena visited Baja California and organized a group of volunteers to colonize what would become Chihuahua; he named this new province “Chihuahua” after his friend José Ángel Mújica y Zavaleta. In 1795 Father Francisco Gómez de la Peña established a mission in what is now Portales; it remained an active mission until 1841. In 1854 Governor Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered the construction of San Fernando Missions National Cathedral as part of his campaign for modernization in Mexico City; however, no church was built because there were not enough funds available for it. For many years Portales relied primarily on agriculture which produced subsistence food for its residents and sold crops at market prices to support local commerce and services such as postal service. In 1912 Don José Isidro Roldán donated land comprising most of today's downtown district to establish University Park; also included were buildings used by the military during World War II including an airfield used by bomber aircraft during 1944's Battle Of Los Angeles In 1931 President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated Doñana Park as University Park's "Promenade". Today much of the park has been restored following damage caused by Hurricane Katrina while other portions have been developed into mixed-use housing developments with retail space . The town dates back to around 1830 where two fathers from Acapulco shared their meal with 9 passengers from Durango who had just come downriver from Veracruz via Morelos Province They cooked their meal over open flames on a dirt platform that served as theirromptu dining hall until they could build something better . A permanent house was built soon afterwards but due to lack funding both families went bankrupt within 3 years so another house was built but again fell apart within 4 years so father Fransico started building walls out side his home instead just hoping one day someone would take pity on him and finance him with some money so he can continue living in peace + dignity
