The town is named after Major General James L. Loving, who fought in the Mexican-American War and also served as commissioner of Indian Affairs for New Mexico Territory. Lovington was founded by settlers in 1881. By 1910, it had a population of 710. The first weapons shop in Lovington opened in 1903, and it remains an active business today. In 1937, local residents formed the American Legion to support their local military forces. One resident supplied all of the ammunition for their shotguns during World War II. The community also produces fruits and vegetables for local restaurants and retail stores; manufactures items such as toys and appliances; provides services such as janitorial cleaning, landscaping care and emergency services; offers apprenticeship programs in various trades including welding, carpentry/construction/home improvement etc.; operates three banks which provide banking services to residents; operates two churches (one Catholic) with over 600 members each - both providing worship services year-round outside on public square fronting main street - one United Methodistchurch serving primarily Catholics while one Pentecostalchurch serves Protestants - both have their own jail facilities housing up to 50 inmates each accommodating county law enforcement officers along with other municipal needs like streetlights etc.; publishes The Courier Journal Newspaper which began publication January 1st 1889 continuing until December 31st 2009 within limits set by then Texas Governor Sid Richardson & later amended & enlarged by current Mayor Roy Chapman daily morning or evening delivery freeof Charge except On special occasions when state open government restrictions require presentation or announcement printed at governmental facility Printed Schedule Herewith
Lovington was founded in 1912 by John and Lillie Loving. The town is named after the couple's firstborn, Lovitton. Lovitton had an early dry goods store and a small post office. In 1916, the post office moved to what is now the Lovingtons' home on Main Street. Lovitton became a small town with two schools, a bank, and a grocery store. In 1922, the first oil well was drilled in Lovington; soon thereafter, people started using oil for their lights and heating needs. One of Lovitton's earliest businesses was the Pecos Store which sold groceries and hardware from its location at 5th & Main Streets. In 1948, Lovington merged with neighboring Gallup to form one municipality.
