Lovington is a small town in New Mexico, United States. It is located in the San Miguel County seat of Lamont. The population was 1,751 at the 2010 census. Lovington is home to the Lovington Museum and Creative Arts Center, which opened in 2001. The town was founded by John and Anna Ladd in 1869 as a log cabin community on an abundance of rich bottom land west of Lamont Station on the Pacific Railroad. The area became known for its numerous watermelons, which were a major local export. In 1907, Lovington erected the first school house in New Mexico Territory and named it after Anna's father, General James K., Countess of Rockingham County (1820-1902). The town post office was established in 1916 and continued until it was discontinued by USPS on November 15, 1970. In 1941, John Witherspoon donated 5 acres (2 ha) of his property east of the railroad tracks off Route 66 to create what is now Lovington Park; this parcel later became part of Lamont Township when that township was created from parts of San Miguel County on January 1, 1959. In 1978, current Mayor Bob Kelleher dedicated the new Main Street Bridge across the river between Lovetington and neighboring Pecos Junction as "John Witherspoon Boulevard" in honor of him and his wife Anne Ladd who had both served as mayors from 1951-1978 inclusive. Lovetington has been listed as a National Historic Landmark since 1990
