Lovington, New Mexico is a small town in the Grant County seat of Grantsburg. The population was 535 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Pecos River, about 60 miles south of Albuquerque and 100 miles east of Santa Fe. According to the United States Census Bureau, Lovington has a total area of 0.9 square mile (2 km²), all land. The town was founded in 1887 by John Aiken and his wife Fannie Aiken, both from Virginia. They named their new community after their son-in-law, General James W. Loving, who had served as a Ulysses S. Grant general during the American Civil War and died in 1881 at age 71 years old while serving as commander of Union troops in Arizona Territory. The grantees were later joined by other Virginians who arrived in this region during the late 1800s such as Jno Ewing and his wife Sarah Hancey Ewing; also among those joining were George Washington Carver and his wife Alma Carver (née Pryor). The town experienced some growth following its incorporation but it stopped when railroads came through the area in the early 1900s because they didn't need an extra stopover for passengers travelling between Santa Fe and Albuquerque
