Between 1851 and 1865, many entrepreneurs opened businesses in and around Lovell Park including anvilsmiths Sam Pinkney and Elijah White, blacksmiths Hiram Waddell and John Haddock, tanneries Spring House & Pritchard Bros., bakery Dearborn & Hawkins (later Swenever), photographer Ephraim Denny (1853-1927), post office (1854), wagon wheelwright Justus Kettles (1860-1939) and pharmacist Augustus Fenton (1852-1937). In 1865, after Mexican settlers had killed two men working on a road near present day Albuquerque by striking them with rocks while they were driving their horses across it, President Abraham Lincoln ordered General Grant to occupy Albuquerque so that American settlers could remove any Mexicans living there without giving them asylum or compensation. This event is sometimes called "The Raid." As a result of this event local residents decided to get rid of all their tools because they didn't want anyone coming into their community armed and seeking revenge against them for having been removed from their homes. Lovington, New Mexico is a small town in the mountain range of Albuquerque County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Lovington has been inhabited by Native American people for over 10,000 years. It was founded in 1869 by José Gomez and others as a rancho (farmstead). In 1907 it became part of the municipality of Albuquerque. Lovington was named for J.D. Lovett, an Englishman who came to Albuquerque in 1859 to purchase land near present-day Roswell and began developing what is now downtown Lovington. The Town of Lovington first appeared on white pages in 1912 when it was proposed as a site for the new University of New Mexico campus; however no action followed until 1916 when university trustees recommended that the town be annexed into Albuquerque because its post office had outgrown its facilities. On July 8, 1920 representatives from twelve towns across New Mexico met at Santa Fe to adopt a resolution recommending annexation into Albuquerque due to ore production on Placerita Mesa within miles of eachtown's boundaries. A referendum placed annexation on the November 3 election ballot but only received 50% support and it failed with 523 votes against compared to 914 votes in favor of incorporation into Albuquerque proper As a result, Lovington remained independent until 1959 when it joined the newly created city of Albuquerque
Lovington is a small town located in the San Miguel County seat of Lovington, New Mexico. The population was 471 at the 2010 census. Lovington has been inhabited by Native Americans since pre-historic times. A mission founded in 1810 was destroyed by Apache Indians in 1867 and not rebuilt for many years until it was abandoned in 1886. The town's first post office opened on July 26, 1865. In February 1912, Lovington had a population of 97 when an oil rig exploded and killed three people and injured over sixty-five others near the town limits. The blast also caused extensive damage to businesses and homes in the area. Lovington is named after Captain John Witherspoon who plied his trade as a shipmaster on the Santa Fe Trail across New Mexico during the early 1800s. In 1854, Witherspoon married Delia Sanchez de la Garza which made him one of her fifty-six brothers-in-law. Their families lived together at mile marker 12 on Old Spanish Trail south of present day Lovington for several years before later moving to what is now Tuscon, Arizona Territory where Witherspoon became a fur trader with Comanche Indian tribesman Manuel López Adobe from 1849 to 1860. After purchasing 1,000 acres (500 ha) west of Tuscon from Adobe for $5 per acre ($100 total), he began building Adobe House in 1861 as his primary residence. When Adobe died childless in 1889, Witherspoon inherited his estate but never lived there again due to health problems; he died at age eighty-one year old on December 5th 1893.
