Loveton is a small town located in County seat of El Paso, New Mexico. The population was 2,837 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Loveton was Domingo Flores in 1875. James Henton and his family settled here in 1881. A post office was established at Loveton on July 12, 1886, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 5, 1907. Loveton has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s when it was part of the Rancho de la Union Mexican land grant given to José Antonio Armijón by President George Washington on November 6, 1786. The rancho stretched from present-day downtown Loveton eastward to what is now White Sands National Monument and included parts of present-day El Paso County as well as portions of Apache and Cochise counties. In 1875, Domingo Flores founded a small community near today's Old Town Loveton with eight families who named their settlement "Taos". In 1902 Santiago Alcala opened the first grocery store in this small community which became known for its fresh produce products and other local goods sold primarily through word-of-mouth marketing techniques. By 1912 there were six stores operating in Taos with Alcala continuing to be the primary distributor; however, within two years all six stores had closed due to low demand from residents who were more interested in fast food restaurants or general merchandising items available at most supermarkets then buying fresh produce from farmers markets/.
