Lovington is a small town located in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The population was 1,005 as of 2010. It is the seat of Lovington County. The town was founded in 1878 by John and Anna Laughlin, who named it for their daughter Anna (Nancy) Laughlin. lovington has been a small community with few residents ever living more than a few miles from each other for most of its history. There have been no permanent settlements or businesses in Lovington since the early 1800s when it consisted of just two houses and twenty-five acres (10 ha) of land grant on which to raise cotton and corn. Families that lived there through the years include those who owned slaves, farmers who raised cattle and hogs, miners who worked the nearby silver mines, and others who came to work on construction projects or build new homes in the area following various railroads’ expansions into central Mexico during the late 19th century. Lovelynton locals often refer to themselves as “chico”—a term considered derogatory but also affectionate—because they are all descendants of one man: José María Cámpora, an indigenous person from Chiapas who arrived in Lovington about 1875 to start a tannery. Cámpora established himself as a successful businessman and political figure in local government before his death at age 82 in 1954; he is buried at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Cemetery.
