In 1865, they moved to their current location where they built a adobe ranch house that still stands today. They also started to grow maize and other crops which helped them generate income to support their growing family. In 1930, they donated their property east of town to the townsite association in order to create a park that would serve as an educational center and cultural reserve for both communities.

In 1876, Lovington became one of six townships within Pecos County when it was organized from portions of two other counties—Bernalillo and Santa Fe Counties—on the urging of Senator James Buchanan*. In 1907, Lovington erected its first school building*.* In 1932*,.*† Lovington residents voted to annex neighboring Willard from Pecos County so that Willard could have an all-time high school enrollment of over 20 students without having to attend Lovington’s then-small schools; however this annexation was vetoed by Govt., Don Armstrong because Willard’s population did not exceed 1,000 people at that time†† *. The population declined after World War II, but rose again following the discovery of oil and gas resources near the town.
