Lovington, New Mexico is a small town located in Rio Grande County, New Mexico. The population was 2,665 at the 2010 census. Lovington is the county seat of Rio Grande County and the only municipality in the county. The name of the town comes from Spanish words "lovedon" meaning "happy". The first settlers to Lovington were men led by José Chávez who arrived in 1878. soon after, another group led by Manuel García established a rancho on what is now Main Street. In 1881, Juan Ponce de León and his party discovered the Santa Fe Trail and journeyed westward. They camped near present-day Lovington on October 24th of that year. When they arrived in New Mexico they took up land that today is known as Rancho La Bolsa. Mr Garcia's son Fernando married María Félix y Costilla (daughter of Don José de la Cueva) on December 10th, 1881 which made him president of Rancho La Bolsa with title to it until his death in 1915; he was buried there with his wife beside him. Mrs Félix y Costilla later became Miss America 1911 and ran for office again in 1932 but lost to Lola Alvarado Buckley* who also served as an educator at school district No 8 until her retirement in 1984.* In 1898 Elihu Root purchased parts of Rancho La Bolsa from Fernando Garcia’s heirs including 600 acres (24 hectares) of forest which has been preserved as part of Gardenhill National Monument since 1938 * In 1906 Juana Montoya visited rancho La Bolsa during her visit to Albuquerque and upon her return recommended its purchase by Governor Morris Weiser based on its strategic location between Albuquerque and Socorro creating new jobs throughout both municipalities while also providing national defense against Apache raids.* subsequently On January 16th 1907 Governor Weiser approved an offer from Edwin Sanger for Rancho La Bolsa along with 3000 acres (120 hectares) surrounding it forming part of newly founded Socorro County* On July 1st 1907 Govt deed transferred ownership/control over allSanta Fe Trail property east of Alamosa Creek to US Army Corps Of Engineers renamed Fort Wingate then Alcalde Francisco Bejarano acquired additional lands east sideMesa Verde Mountains thereby completing purchase although some rights still remain with original owners

In 1924, the town passed an ordinance establishing itself as a city and becoming one of the fastest-growing towns in New Mexico. It officially became a city on January 1, 1927. The population reached 4,000 by 1940 and peaked at 11,500 in 1960 before dropping to 7,500 by 1970. However, recent growth has again returned the town to its pre-crisis level of population and prosperity. Today, Lovington is home to many businesses and institutions including: The University of New Mexico School of Medicine; Stonington Elementary School; Central Presbyterian Church; The American Legion Post #527; and the Lovett Museum of Art & History housed within The New Mexico Historical Foundation (NMHF).
Lovington was founded in 1847 by the Gold Rush miners. The town grew rapidly and soon had a post office, store, and school. In 1865, Lovington became the county seat of San Juan County. The county government moved to Lovington in 1887. In 1912, the state legislature created San Juan County Metropolitan District, which included Lovington and other towns in San Juan County. The district was abolished in 1958 when San Juan County seceded from New Mexico.
