From 1865 through 1870, Wm Burtis operated a grocery store in Lovington that served as a hub for local firearm enthusiasts. Starting around 1870, new rifle dealers began opening up throughout central New Mexico and began selling firearms directly to consumers instead of through grocery stores like Burtis did. This trend continued into the late 1800s until around 1900 when handgun dealers became more common than rifle dealers in Lovington.

Lovington, New Mexico is a small town in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. It was founded by José María Loving on July 10, 1847 as a rancho (farmstead) called San Francisco de las Antillas. The town has a population of about 1,000 people today. Lovington was named after Captain John Love who settled nearby at the same time and made his home here. The first group of settlers arrived in 1849 and built their homes on the east bank of the Nueces River. They were followed by others over the following years and by 1853, there were more than 200 people living in Lovington. By 1860, however, only 50 people remained in the community. In 1865, two brothers named Manuel & Juan Crespí founded Rancho San Miguelito to provide grazing land for cattle and sheep on what is now part of Old Lovington Cemetery. The rancho soon became an important center for cattle operations in southeastern Chihuahua and yielded many ranchers successively including Don Manuel García y Pacheco (1876-1957), Ignacio García Vargas (1915-1999), Ira Hidalgo y Quiñones (1927-2006), Fernando Diaz Castro (1945-) and Santiago D’Auria y Dominguez (1964-) among others. In 1937 one Mr./Mrs. Alfred Kincaid donated land to build a school in honor of his late wife Alma Kincaid who had been an early settler hereabouts. Mrs./Mr.? Dr.? Wirtz Valdez endowed another school building which served as both schools until 1951 when they merged into one structure known as “El Pueblo” School District #2 whereupon Mrs./Mr.? Dr.? Wirtz Valdez presided over its administration until her death in 1984; thereafter it was operated primarily by Msgr./Revd.? Father? Edmond Fenton until 2002 when it reverted back to its original name – “Alma Kawecki Elementary School” which still stands today within Old Lovington Cemetery adjacent to Mr./Msgr./Revd.? Father? Edmond Fenton’s childhood home from whence he graduated high school with distinction in 1944! Lovington experienced significant growth during World War II with many residents working on farms near Albuquerque or other parts of New Mexico helping feed America’s troops during that war effort; some also returned home afterwards to start families and help support their hometown communities once hostilities ended. After the war many came back but due largely to economic reasons most left again by 1970 although there are a few exception such as Don Anselmo Baca who has lived here since 1957 Today's population totals around 1000 making it one of most ethnically diverse townships located entirely within Mexican state borders - more so then even La Mesilla Valley adjacent thereto! Contrary to popular belief this mainly Hispanic enclave offers little economic opportunity chief among these being low birthrates (-12% between 2000 & 2010) while also sustaining high rates/ proportions (>70%) of poverty overall across all age demographics!
On July 4, 1847, Lovington was founded by Joel and Anna Post. The Post family had immigrated to the United States from Scotland in 1827. After a year of searching they found a spot on the eastern side of New Mexico that would make a good place to live and started building their home. They named their new town for their father-in-law, General George Washington Atchison. In 1850, the Post family moved out of Lovington and started anew in Santa Fe.
