Beginning in the early 1800s, rifle, pistols and shotguns were being manufactured and sold in the town of Lovington, New Mexico. The town was founded by Father Miguel Avalos and named for his mother, Maria de la Luz y Valdez. In 1851, a post office was established in Lovington and within a few years it had become one of the most important centers of trade in the area. Ammunition production began to increase as well, which led to increased demand for firearms. In 1873, a frame-lock revolver was patented by John Millingtonsmith. This gun became known as the Model 1865 Rifle. It consisted of an 8” barrel with a tapered design that allowed it to be fired from any position within range. The weapon was also incredibly accurate and proved very useful during the American Civil War. By 1885, shotgun development had progressed sufficiently that Cannon Manufacturing Company began producing shotguns under their own name in Lovington. This company continued to produce high quality shotguns until 1907 when they merged with Remington Arms Corporation (now Remington Outdoor) to form what is now considered one of America’s leading shotgun manufacturers.
