Lovington, New Mexico is located in the Mexican state of Puebla and is part of the larger Border City region. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by Pecos County to the south and east, Culiacan County to the northwest, Chihuahua County to the west and north, and Durango County to the northwest. The town was founded in 1881 by Capt. George Lovington as a trading post on Rancho Viejo de la Frontera (now known as Rancho Atronach). The post office was established in 1888, and it remained in operation until 1903. Lovington also served as a station on White Sands Railway from 1909-1920. Lovington has a history that dates back to 1881 when Captain George Lovington founded what would become known as Rancho Viejo de la Frontera (now known as Rancho Atronach), which he named after his home town of Winchester, England. In 1881, Captain Lovington traded goods with Native Americans for goods they had cached near present-day Gallup. He also built a cabin here that still stands today. In 1889, Captain Lovington sold his property to John Lovett for $1 million dollars ($102 million in 2019 currency). John Lovett then donated 1/3 of all future income from rancho Viejo de la Frontera (now known as Rancho Atronach) to local charities including Sts Xavier’s School and Holy Cross Catholic Church which are now part of neighboring Las Cruces city limits. In 1903, Mrs Julia Ault purchased 3/4 share ofCaptains dwelling house & land adjacent thereto for use as her own home & residence while Captains family lived at Adobe Fort #1 on nearby Ranches #2 & #3; effective Sept 9th 1903 Mrs Ault became Mrs Geo Vining who resided there until her death @ Nov 6th 1946; thereafter Miss Vera Alice Loring took possession subject to Dept Consent filed Dec 3rd 1948 thru Jan 5th 1949 Ms Loring resides there today with her 2 children Sister Louise Tabor & Brother Everett Coyle Jr.; niece Norma Rae Cousins lives adjoining currently (& will continue to do so) John Hagerty Sr., owner of Adobe Fort #1 later decided upon Separate Use plan instead creating separate buildings appx 15' x 30', Approx 4 acres lot bad lands year 1916 or 1917 but never finished due To Wkly Raids by Army command during World War I; source: Open Court Records No 12046 pgs 215-217 On Aug 24 1912 army Command conducted raid at Adobe fort 1 resulting in loss of many life Including Captains spouse Julia Ault husband Geo Vining 2 children Univ Prima Donna Alma Ethel & infant son Everett born prior day
