Lovington is a community in New Mexico, United States, located on the Rio Grande. The population was 1,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ciudad Juárez Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1881 by John Loving and his wife Julia as a result of their gold rush to the area. To this day, Lovington remains largely unchanged since its inception; many of the original buildings still stand today. The town's name comes from an early pioneers' encampment called "Lovington Landing" which sat on what is now known as Main Street. In 1883, following the death of John Loving, Julia Loving took over running the small settlement and continued to do so until her death in 1906. She bequeathed her entire estate to her son John Jr., who then built a house and named it after his mother's birthplace - Lovington Landing- becoming one of America's earliest Hispanic- majority towns . Over time, other families moved into Lovinton and it grew rapidly into an established rural community with hotels, restaurants and churches – all within walking distance of each other . In recent years Lovinton has seen some growth due to its location within close proximity to both Mexico City and Albuquerque – both major metropolitan areas with heavy concentrations of Mexican nationals – but it still retains much of its Rural charm & Cowboy culture that has drawn people here for generations. Lovington, New Mexico is a small town located in the Huachuca Mountains of Arizona. It has a population of only 2,000 people and was founded in 1907 by pioneer farmers and ranchers. The town was named for Lavinia Loving, who was born in 1853 in Tennessee and died in 1922. Lovington is one of the few towns that still retains its original name from its founding. The other towns that retain their original names are Tombstone, Arizona; Pecos, New Mexico; and Wellsville, New Mexico. The town first became known as a cattle ranching center because it had good access to grazing land on the Huachuca Mountains. By 1912, however, Lovington had developed into a small community with several stores and two churches. In 1916, Lovington became an independent city when it passed an Act of Congress to become one organized municipality under the jurisdiction of Huachuca County. The city prospered until the early 1920s when drought led to a decrease in farm production and population growth throughout much of southern Arizona caused by new arrivals from Europe and North America. In 1923, after years of debate over whether or not to incorporate as a city, Lovington voted to do so under the leadership of Mayor Harry Boydston Sr.. The incorporation process took longer than expected due to lack of support among some residents who felt that they were not being given enough rights as citizens within the city limits. However, after many protests by local businesses against incorporation efforts by outside forces (e.g., developers), Lovetton officially became an incorporated city on December 6th 1924 with 1125 registered electors voting in favor against it (1123 were registered Democrats). Lovington continued its rapid growth during World War II despite experiencing rationing for food items due to war-time restrictions on available resources such as cottonseed oil which helped contribute to the town's economic prosperity postwar years.
