The first post office for Lovington was established in 1872. In 1907, Lovington incorporated as a municipality and changed its name to honor Nicholas Lovett Sr., its founder and namesake. The current version of the town's name was adopted in 1959 when it merged with neighboring Santa Fe City. Lovington has been home to several businesses including Wacoal America Corporation (a manufacturer of flooring products), Northwest Mining & Manufacturing Company (a mining company that operated an open-pit mine near Lovetingtons downtown square), Jardine Matthey Company (a retailer focused on southwestern American goods) and Pacific Telesis Communications Inc., now known as AT&T Wireless Empire State LLC Lovetingtons downtown square features a restaurant, gift store, hardware store and bank—all within easy walking distance of one another. The plaza also offers public transportation to/from Albuquerque through Albuquerque Transit Authority buses or Amtrak trains station Exit 64B off I-25 southbound into Albuquerque .

Lovington experienced significant economic growth during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its location near the Chihuahua-Arizona Railway and its role in cotton production. The population of Lovington peaked at over 10,000 in 1920 but declined following World War I and the Great Depression. The population of Lovington decreased again during the 1990s through suburban development.
