Los Lunas is a small town in Grant County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Grant County. The Town of Los Lunas was founded on December 16, 1865 by Captains John W. and James Atherton while they were exploratory traders in what is now Grantsville, New Mexico. They named their new settlement after the two local mountain ranges that form its eastern and southern boundaries: The Rio Grande to the east and The Pecos to the west. Los Lunas became a full town on May 10, 1876 when it incorporated as a borough within Grantsville; Borough status was granted to it on November 15 of that year by an act of Congress under which Mexican citizenship was given to all citizens of Grant County who had resided therein for five years before incorporation date. The first post office at Los Lunas opened in 1870; it served until 1907. At its peak during the 1930s, Los Lunas had a population of over 3,000 people. However, since then its population has decreased steadily as agricultural production has become more important in the community's economy; as well as traffic congestion caused by growing levels of Interstate 25 traffic in Grantsville and elsewhere in Grant County. In 2000-2001 there were efforts made to revitalize downtown Los Lunas with funding from the New Mexico State Legislature through four appropriation Acts (SB 1227/HB 936) - AB 3759/HJ 3772 - LD 5609/SB 1070 - known collectively as "The Downtown Revitalization Program". However these initiatives did not result in any significant increase in business or tourist arrivals until later that decade when increased I-25 traffic moved downtown businesses into other areas such as Centennial Park North and South along US 66 near Dona Ana Valley Airport where commercial development continues today with major occupant accounts including Hilton Head Marriott Resort & Spa, Hyatt Regency Albuquerque Airport Hotel & Casino Resort and Southwest Airlines Corporation Headquarters Campus). As one result of I-25 activity downtownGrantCounty residents have turned increasingly towards rural areas outside their municipality limits for both housing development opportunities (e."Las Tunitas", "Albuquerque") and grocery shopping because access to larger markets has become very restricted or nonexistent southward along I-25 south of Albuquerque proper (e."Santa Fe"). In addition this pattern has been paralleled statewide with some communities experiencing increasing residential subdivisions rather than growth within their city limits while others are seeing declines even though they maintain high populations despite limited land availability due to oil drilling operations off their coast1 In short while large suburbs continue to sprawl outward into rural areas throughout most parts of NM2 there are indications that smaller towns are feeling stagnation or retreat which may lead ultimately to increased suburban sprawl if government support does not pick up pace

Today, Los Lunas retains a nucleus of Aztec-era settlers who are custodians of its cultural history; however, most residents now work outside the local community or have retired to area golf courses or country homes.
