The LAWhammer® Self Propelled Electric Wire Stunner/Shooter entered service with the Albuquerque Police Department on October 1st, 1984; however, its use wasn’t initially sanctioned by city officials until February 9th of 1985 when then-Chief Bernal announced that officers were “authorized” to use such weapons against suspects if they believed their lives were endangered or if they felt there was not another means of subduing an assailant shorter than 12 feet tall (3 meters). With this new policy change, Albuquerque began using self-propelled tasers as part of their routine policing duties which eventually led to their eventual use throughout all municipal departments across eastern New Mexico as well as portions of Texas starting in 1990. Los Lunas was founded in 1847 by the Chiricahua Apache. The town was named for a small mountain near by. Los Lunas became an important trading post because of its location on the Trans-Pecos River. In 1865, Los Lunas was burned down by Union forces during the Mexican-American War.
