Los Lunas is a small town in southeastern New Mexico, United States. It was founded by Native Americans in the 1840s, and has been inhabited by Hispanics and Anglo-Americans since the early 20th century. The economy of Los Lunas is primarily agricultural, with crops such as cotton, corn, and hay being the mainstay of its economy. The town has a population of about 1,500 people. The first Europeans to visit Los Lunas were Spanish traders who landed there in 1698 on what is now called Rancho San Felipe. In 1827, Antonio López de Santa Anna founded the towns of Holloman and Pecos along the Rio Grande River near present-day Albuquerque; both settlements received grants from President James K. Polk in 1833. The grant for Los Lunas was issued by then-Governor José Joaquín Murillo y Herrera on December 6, 1834; it included land that would later become part of Los Lunas Township. In 1886, when New Mexico became a state, Los Lunas was one of six villages within Alamogordo County that were given to that county's newly formed government as part of the homesteading program administered by Governor Woodrow Wilson pursuant to his Rough Rider Program. By 1907, only two residents remained living in Los Lunas: Lucille Coxey (estimated date) and her son John Fenton Coxey Jr.—the last white person to live therepersonally until after World War II when they sold their home to an American family who continued to live there until 1959. After years of being without water or power due to construction projects undertaken by Alamogordo County—such as the construction of I-25—the community finally had access to electricity through an electrical substation built at mile marker 505 on Route 66 just north of present day Miami Gardens; however DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) service did not arrive until 1996 . On July 3rd 1984 a tornado touched down near Veterans Memorial Hospital northwestbound exit #2 Loop which destroyed all but one home inside hospital grounds including those belonging to Lucille Coxey’s daughter Dona Jane Steenkamp whose remains still rest there today next door adjacent Tochterman Park Road while Dona Jane’s husband Harry Weems also lost his life during this stormy night/weekend tragedy located just south east side Of Veterans Memorial Hospital off Loop 2 just west Of Veteran Boulevard
Los Lunas was founded in 1871 by Manuel Antonio Martinez, who named it for his friend José de Los Lunas. The community grew rapidly and in 1907 it had a population of 1,500 people. It became an agricultural town and is home to the oldest cotton gin in New Mexico. In 1968, the town was renamed for Jesse Owens, who won the gold medal in the 200-meter walk at the Olympics.
