Los Lunas is a small town in New Mexico, located about 25 miles east of Truth or Consequences. The population was 2,100 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pascua Yaqui Indian Reservation. The first Europeans to visit Los Lunas were Spanish traders in 1541. In 1836, Las Vegas de la Llave founded a settlement there and named it La Vaca Vieja (Old cow). In 1872, José Antonio Mejía organized an expedition against the Arikara Indians and settled at Los Lunas. He also built a fort here in 1875. Mexican settlers arrived in Los Lunas beginning in the late 1830s and early 1840s and by 1860 had developed a small community hereabouts composed of Anglo- Mexicans, Mestizos (Spanish-speaking Native Americans), and Apaches ( Apache Indians ). In 1865, Manuel Romero established himself as a saloonkeeper on Main Street and soon became one of the most influential figures in local politics. Romero was postmaster from 1868 to 1870; justice of the peace from 1870 to 1872; member of the governing board from 1873 to 1880; president pro tempore of his county from 1880 to 1886; speaker of the New Mexico House from 1886 to 1888; delegate to Congress from 1889 until his death in 1896. In 1902 he was inducted into the New Mexico Hall of Fame A new courthouse was built near La Vaca Vieja in 1907–08 by W E B Ware Architects under contract with NMH&R Co., builders for A G White & Sons real estate firm which had purchased section 8O Rancho Seco two years earlierfrom Don Lorenzo Martinez Sr., owner/operator thereof since 1903 which included much land now within town limits including much Osborn Mesa .
