Los Lunas, New Mexico is a small town located in the southeastern corner of NM, about an hour's drive from Albuquerque. It is bordered by the Rio Grande to the east, and Pecos National River to the south. The population in 2010 was 469, according to the US Census Bureau. The area that would become Los Lunas was first settled by Native Americans in Pre-Columbian times. In 1836, Spanish colonists arrived in what is now Los Lunas and began developing it as a rancho (land grant) farm. The town was founded on May 10, 1911 when citizens of Albuquerque petitioned for its incorporation as a city. In 1936, during World War II, Los Lunas became one of several towns along the US-Mexico border housing military personnel and their families who were based at Fort Bliss northwest of Lubbock, Texas. After hostilities ended in 1945 and most of these soldiers returned home, many left Los Lunas behind to take up various civilian roles within the new jurisdiction established by Congress following World War II. The last military personnel left Fort Bliss in 1957; all remaining troops moved out beginning in 1959. Initially part of El Paso County (later Presidio County), Los Lunas voted to secede from El Paso County on November 16th 1912 as part of an effort led by Mayor John Wainwright to improve local government services and allow more self-reliance within their community economy. On December 20th 1912 residents met at a schoolhouse near present day Kit Carson Road (now UGram Boulevard) to organize themselves into a town committee with John Ewell appointed mayor pro tem.. That same year they also organized their first election which resulted in two members being elected: Amedeeo Lopez (vice president) and Manuel Martinez (mayor). During this time, Los Lunas experienced significant growth thanks to its strategic location and infrastructure: The town had a railroad line connecting it with Santa Fe and Tucson, as well as access to water resources and land west of las lunas itself. However, due to economic factors such as mining exploration efforts in nearby Chihuahua andlos deportados (the Mexican Revolution), Las Lunas began to decline in popularity beginning in the 1920s. This declined further after World War II when new industries such as agriculture supplanted industry related to mining and transportation; nevertheless, Los Lunas remains an important cultural center today thanks to its rich Hispanic history
