The town also raised chickens and pigs, as well as ducks and geese. Some people also manufactured goods such as saddles, hats, harnesses, candles and quilts from local woolen fabrics. However, it did experience some activity during World War I when several thousand men from nearby Socorro served in various military units throughout the war effort. After World War I ended, Los Lunas experienced rapid growth due to oil exploration in nearby New Mexico Territory; however, it again slowed down after Prohibition began effective in 1920. In the 1930s there were no new businesses built in Los Lunas because so much production had been done outside of state boundaries by now that prices for fuel had become too high for companies to justify doing business within New Mexico territory anymore.

The name stuck and has been used ever since by residents. Los Lunas is located on Interstate 40 just west of I-25 exit 169A. It lies at an elevation of 1,819 feet (500 meters). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 7 square miles (19 km²), all land. As of 2010 census data*, there were 9998 people residing in Los Lunas; 3% Hispanic or Latino* ; 92% white citizens; 2% black or African American citizens; 0% American Indian or Alaska Native citizens; 1% Asian Americans† ; 5% from other races‡ . As reported by Gallup polling from 2015*, Latinos make up 23 percent of LAUNAS residents while 66 percent identify themselves as white/Caucasian alone

Los Lunas is a small town in New Mexico, located about 15 miles northeast of Alamogordo. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. It has been home to miners and their families since the early 19th century. In 1912, Los Lunas became part of the United States after it was acquired from Spain by President Theodore Roosevelt as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The community's name comes from two Spanish words: luna (moon) and sol (sun). The firstmining settlement in what is now Los Lunas was founded by Mexican gold miners in 1858. By 1870, there were more than 20 mining operations in the area, including several mills that produced flour for local markets. However, production declined during the American Civil War because war-related factors such as military requisitions stopped silver production in New Mexico; instead, supplies came from California. However, new discoveries at Silver Lake led to renewed mining activity around Los Lunas beginning in 1915. From 1916 until 1959, over 2 million ounces of silver were mined here – more than any other location on the US West Coast combined. At its peak production capacity during World War II (1941-1945), Los Lunas had an output of 535 metric tons per day! However, when copper prices began to decline starting in 1978 and continuing into the 1990s due to environmental degradation and global competition among mines across North America, las lunas lost much of its silver and copper resources - leaving it with only 10%Of its pre-Depression population today remaining engaged in smelting or extractive activities."
