Los Lunas is a census-designated place in Santa Fe County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,087 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area. The first European to visit Los Lunas was Manuel Nieto on July 8, 1614. He may have been exploring the area for his father who had landed there with de Churubusco in 1540. There were no permanent residents until 1847 when Colonel John C. Fremont established a military post here during the Mexican–American War to monitor and protect Santa Fe against possible Indian attack. In 1879 Elihu Washburne established a trading post near present day Roswell and began buying land from Native Americans as part of his Land Grant policy which he called "Washburne's Law." By 1902 this area included much of what are now Los Lunas, Deming, Angelo and Socorrovillano townships and parts of Bernalillo and Juarez counties. In 1916 it became an incorporated town when it absorbed most of Deming Township including about . Chavez Avenue still forms its eastern border today

Los Lunas, New Mexico is a city in the US state of New Mexico. It is located on the Santa Fe River, about 20 miles (32 km) north of Albuquerque and 10 miles (16 km) east of Roswell. As of the 2010 census, the population was 26,711. The name "Luna" is Spanish for "moon." The city was founded by Mormons in 1867 as part of their wagon train from Nauvoo, Illinois. The Mormon pioneers arrived at what is now Los Lunas from Salt Lake City in October 1847 on horseback. They established a small town named Provo Canyon to serve as their winter base camp before continuing their journey to Salt Lake City in February 1848. On July 24, 1850 Brigham Young's group led by David Whitmer reached Los Lunas and found it empty except for a few Pueblo Indians living off game resources that they were able to trade with local ranchers. In 1867 Brigham Young ordered his followers to move out of Provo Canyon and establish themselves permanently in what would become Los Lunas. On January 15, 1870 President Ulysses S Grant issued an executive order creating Luna County which included most of present-day Luna County as well as parts of Socorro and Pena Blanca counties west of the Rio Grande River. The first post office opened in Los Lunas on March 3, 1870; it was called Grantsville after General Grant who had presided over its opening ceremonies. In 1905 Linares became the seat of government for both Luna County and Socorro County when they were organized into one countywide government under United States jurisdiction after the Mexican Revolution ended Radicals gained control over much statewide government while Mexicans continued to live predominantly within their own communities until after World War II when many Mexicans left Santa Fe due to economic opportunities available elsewhere
