Los Lunas, New Mexico is a small town located in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The population was 5,932 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ciudad Juárez metropolitan area. Los Lunas is bordered by Chinle to the north, Pecos to the east, and San Juan Bautista to the south. The first European settlers in what is now Los Lunas were Spanish soldiers who arrived in 1819 looking for a new route through Mexico that would bypass Chapultepec Castle on theMexican-Uruguay border. They named their new settlement after General Antonio Luna y Costilla who had led them during their previous expedition into southern Chihuahua. In 1836, President Manuel Menéndez de la Peña designated Los Lunas as one of nineteen towns in New Mexico under his jurisdiction because he felt that this would provide more stability in an unsettled region where local Indians were often ungovernable and dangerous. The town was officially founded on July 16, 1881 by John Waddell with land grants from Captain Gorman and others including ranching pioneer Emilio Castillo and Josefina Gomez de la Madrid. The first post office was established in 1888 and continued service until 1912 when it closed because of lack of mail service between Los Lunas and Ciudad Juárez. In 1903, a schoolhouse/church was built on acreage donated by Mrs. Hilda Ayerdel Campo; it operated until 1951 when it was replaced by a modern building which still serves as a community center today. In 1907–08 two companies of Ulysses S Grant’s Expeditionary Force fought against Pancho Villa during his attempt to take over Veracruz; one company became known as “Los Angeles” due to its Llanuras Battalion (later renamed 2nd Infantry Regiment) being stationed here while other companies served with distinction elsewhere within New Mexico Territory before liberation came later that year or even earlier: Company C (Lloyd Lewis), commanded by Captain Alfred Jourdain unit participated brilliantly at Ocampo Bridge; butchered many Mexicans there including women and children- so public outcry forced withdrawal order finally given for all retreating forces not to cross such bridge without immunity from prosecution! This event remains significant sources concerning Apache Wars history
