Throughout this time period, violence against women decreased as society began to accept more women into society but shooting remained a popular form of entertainment for men throughout New Mexico Territory (later Arizona). In 1919, Arthur Young opened his own business at Seventh Avenue and Santa Fe Boulevard which became one of the most successfulgun stores in towndue largely to its efficient employee management system coupled with its wide selectionof rifles, shotguns, pistols and ammunition

In 1847, a group of Mormons (Mormons are followers of Jesus Christ) moved from Nauvoo, Illinois to what is now Los Lunas after being driven out of Nauvoo by the French. They called the area la Luna because there was no moon at that time. The Mormons built a fort here and began trading with Mexicans and other Indians. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General Grant's army passed through this area on its way to Mexico City. When General Robert E. Lee's army attacked Union forces near San Miguel de Allende on April 12, 1865, General Grant ordered his army to retreat and cross the Rio Grande at Mesilla. Aftermath of the war led to large numbers of Mormon refugees settling in New Mexico Territory. The Fort Sumner Massacre occurred here on July 14, 1870 when Mormon militiamen opened fire on Ulysses S. Grant's Cavalry Regiment while they were fleeing from Mexican cavalry pursued by Mexican troops pursuing them across a open field in Santa Fe County
