As of the 2010 census, the population of Los Lunas was 3,827 people. The name "Lunás" means "moonlight." The original settlement was on the east side of what is now Interstate 25, just west of present-day Albuquerque. In 1875, Miguel de la Torre and his wife, Josefa decided to move their family to this area because there were no good grazing lands in southern New Mexico. They started a small farm with twenty cows and four horses. Their first crop grew corn but they soon realized that they needed more land to grow crops so they purchased another forty acres from Joséfa's brother Francisco. They also built a cabin which served as their home for many years until it burned down in 1906. In 1912, when world war I began, Los Lunas became an important military post due to its location on the Mexican border between US territories south of Baja California and US territory north of Arizona Territory. After World War I ended, Los Lunas reverted back to civilian control and continued to grow as a small ranching community until after the mid-1960s when it completely dried up due to successive floods caused by monsoon rains across much of New Mexico during summertime months. Today there are only five houses left standing out among all the ruins from those years; three dates back before 1910 while two date from around 1970/1980 after most residents had fled or been driven out by governmental policies supportinghomelessness instead of human growth that has led not only to rebuild infrastructure but also new families coming into this once struggling community over recent decades
