The territory included what is now Los Lunas County – including present-day Las Lunas – as well as parts of Taos County and Española County. As part of this acquisition, the U.S government approved the creation of military posts throughout New Mexico Territory; one such post was located at Taos Pueblo near what is now downtown Los Lunas. On September 10th of that year, Captain John Sibley arrived at Taos Pueblo with his detachment of cavalry under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer to establish Fort Sumner on Palo Duro Canyon north of mesa Topock Mountains [1]. Captain Sibley had heard about General Santa Anna’s army advancing through central New Mexico Territory towards Albuquerque when he decided to investigate[2]. He reached Taos Pueblo on September 12th after traveling overland from Carlsbad Springs[3]. The first shots fired into Mexican territory during American involvement in the war had killed two men three days earlier while hunting rabbit rabbits near San Miguel de Allende east of modern day Albuquerque[4]. But despite this wasteland, people continue to call Los Lunas their home because it has always been an important place for them – both commercially and culturally. Today, Los Lunas remains an agricultural center with several thousand acres of farmland irrigated by nearby rivers; however, most residents still rely on extractive industries such as mining and ranching for their income (including agriculture). nonetheless they maintain close relationships with their neighbors in Santa Fe County where they share common interests including music festivals and summer concerts at nearby Phoenix Park;

Los Lunas is a town in Grant County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Anglo-American settlers in 1867. The town is located on the Rio Grande and is named for Santiago Linares, a Spanish explorer who explored this river region in the 16th century. Los Lunas Post Office was established in 1872 and closed in 1934. In 1907, Harry Emerson Fosdick had his first cattle operation here and it continues to produce beef here to this day. In 1915-16, El Paso World's Fair took place at the town's fairgrounds; many of today’s businesses were built during that time around Emerson Fosdick’s ranch operations ( including the current location of Hi-Bakery). Los Lunas has been home to numerous Native American tribes: The Acoma Pueblo lived here before they relocated eastward to Albuquerque; the Kiowa / Cheyenne / Arapaho live near present day Roswell; while the Apache were long tenant farmers of ranchers along the river until about 1920 when they left for their own land south of Tucson AZ due to pressure from US Cavalry units moving into Apache Territory during WWI
