Los Lunas is a small town in New Mexico. It's located about 10 miles east of Pecos and 20 miles west of Gallup. The population was 2,906 at the 2010 census. On May 6, 1912, the town had a population of 1,827 and it was renamed Los Lunas again on October 15 of that year when the rest of Santa Fe County became part of New Mexico State. In 1928 they built a frame building which served as their first schoolhouse; it burned down in 1951 but was rebuilt with new materials and doors that still functioning today. Los Lunas is a town in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 2,922 at the 2000 census. It was once part of the Apache Indian reservation. A half-breed named Gabriel García Márquez settled there in 1827 after ranching operations near Gallup failed to produce enough income to support him and his small family. García Márquez became known for writing One Hundred Years of Solitude, which took place in Los Lunas between 1868 and 1887. In 1865, Lieutenant Colonel John Custer's 5th U.S Cavalry Regiment destroyed a village of Apaches south of present-day Albuquerque on the San Pedro River; three years later another party led by Captain George Armstrong killed some Indians near present-day Roswell. This event has been called "Custer's Massacre". In 1870, General Nelson Miles ordered all Native Americans living east of Santa Fe to leave their homes or face military retaliation; this order led to what is now known as the "New Mexico Campaign"es against Apache raiding parties and civilian settlers throughout most of New Mexico Territory (except for Tucson). More than 1,000Apache were killed or wounded during these engagements; about one-third of the total fatalities among Native American groups in New Mexico during the Mexican–American War came from raids by Apaches operating out of Los Lunas and other settlements along silverado Creek north of Pima City. With few exceptions, European settlers in New Mexico welcomed federal troops with open arms as they marched into territorial boundaries seeking revenge for Custer's Massacre; many residents across much of southern Arizona joined forces with Mexicans fighting against Anglo invaders while militia forces shadowed army columns patrolling southwestern New Mexico Territory
