This enabled the town to grow rapidly during the late nineteenth century as different businesses started up to serve travelers coming through the area: hotels, theatres, restaurants and stores all sprang up around what would become known as "The Strip." During World War II, many American servicemen were stationed at nearby El Paso Army Airfield (nowpresently Parachute Field). Many local residents helped provide food and shelter for troops during their stay; some also managed local businesses while they were away. After the war ended in 1945, many soldiers returned home and las vegas began to rebound as a bustling commercial city. In 1972 – less than two years after it first opened – las vegas became one of only two U.S cities hosting both the Summer Olympics (the other being Athens), making it one of America's most highly visible tourist destinations during this time period! This success led to further development within las vegas over time;Today there are several major shopping malls throughout downtown which accommodate nearly every type of shopper imaginable along with numerous nightlife districts providing everything from live music performances to sophisticated dining options
