In 1896 local Mormon rancher John Sutter arrived with his family and founded Sutter Ranch near present-day downtown Las Vegas. In 1899 he built the first permanent school in town when he purchased land east of present-day Fremont Street from Juan Gómez de la Torre for $5 per acre ($60 per square mile). In 1921 construction began on what became today's Convention Center complex which included new hotels and other buildings includingYES! Ballroom which still stands today as one of the most iconic venues in all of Las Vegas history hosting many world famous events such as Elvis Presley show appearances etc... In 1953 Kirt Robertson started playing professional football for Los Angeles Rams before moving to Sudden Valley after their merger with NFL Oakland Raiders
