Las Vegas has been inhabited by humans since at least 8300 B.C., when Ancestral Puebloans built their ancient cliff-face village at Mesquite near what is now downtown Las Vegas. The first permanent settler in what would become Las Vegas was Jens Christensen from Denmark who arrived on July 8, 1864 during the Mexican–American War on horseback overland from Albuquerque, New Mexico. By 1870 there were around seventy people living in Nacoocheetown scattered along the banks of the Little Colorado River west of Page Avenue and east of Fremont Street; many were hardy miners who had come down from Wyoming Territory looking for rich silver ore prospecting through Howe Hill Country some 12 miles to the north east but they brought no silver with them because much good gold had been found nearby on McLaughlin Creek about 6 miles (10 km) to the south east and even further down river at Sucker Creek but it never got off his hands so he sold all his claims and moved back upriver again to start mining again On October 10th 1880 Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputy James Atha discovered maps prepared by Captain Manuel Corona showing that a great lead mine existed just northeast (almost due north) of today’s downtown Las Vegas on what is now called Charleston Road between Charleston Boulevard and I-15 South going under Red Rock Canyon; Acting upon receipt of this notification Sheriff Atha set out immediately with mounted cavalrymen and wagon drivers led by Capt’n John Aspinall proceeded downriver Several citizens came out to watch us as we drove up about 4 miles(6 km) below today’s downtown Las Vegas where we stopped near what is now known as Prospect Drive; from here we continued downstream past today’s Hendersonhidroelectric Plant property until we reached Spanish Springs whereupon our horses started getting tired so we unloaded our supplies including picksaxes & shovels & went back upstream several hundred yards whereupon Capt’n Aspinall ordered everyone back home before dark driving back home himself4 This discovery opened up huge possibilities for zincmining not only in Nevada but also northern Arizona etc etc etc5 The first stagecoach trip took place on April 20th 1881 transporting 121 tons ($2 per ton)of zinc ore direct to Monument Valley coal mines just outside Tucson AZvia South Pass Road thence via Mammoth Cave National Park across White Sands Lake then via Salt River Crossing finally arriving safely at Prescott AZ On November 5th 1881 Jens Christensen married Emma Johansen née Rasmussen7 They farmed land northeast of today's downtown Las Vegas until 1911 when they leased some acreage southwest corner Of Maryland Parkway And Tropicana Avenue For $1 an acre8 Here they built their largest house ever - still standing - named "Henderson ranch" Original fence included 350 feet long side streets ran perpendicular to property line 9 After buying Henderson Ranch they began extensive remodeling including installing central heating & cooling systems (First indoor building used this way in Uptown Los Angeles), adding a swimming pool & tennis court – both original features remain extantToday Henderson Ranch remains one Of The Most Famous All Time residences In Downtown Las Vegas Its well worth a visit!
