Las Cruces was founded on October 15, 1847 by Manuel Armijo and his brother Francisco Armijo after they surveyed and acquired land near present day downtown Las Cruces. In early years it served primarily as a military garrison for nearby Albuquerque but soon became an important center for commerce and industry with its numerous mills, mines, foundries, theaters and other businesses. Las Cruces grew rapidly in both its importance within New Mexico and nationally due to its location midway between two major transcontinental railroads - Union Pacific Railroad (UP) in Albuquerque to the east and California Central Railroad (CCR) in Phoenix to the west - as well as its favorable climate which contributed to its becoming one of America's leading manufacturing centers. By 1899 it had become one of America's most populous cities with over 2 million residents. In 1908 Santa Fe County was created from parts of Santa Clara County and part of Chihuahua County when those counties were broken up by Congress following the Mexican Revolution into what are now Nuevo México (NewMexico), Sonora (Arizona), Baja California (Chihuahua), Tamaulipas (Nuevo León/Leyte) and Tuxtla Gutiérrez (Hidalgo). The new county encompassed much of what is now eastern Santa Fe County except for a small portion that formed part of modern day Las Crucs Township until 1912 when that township was taken over by downtown LasCruces proper. On November 15, 1912 La Plaza de la Constitución – also known locally as Plaza de las Flores – was dedicated in honor of President William McKinley who had been assassinated two weeks earlier while attending a falconry show at El Paso Ranch near Socorro while on his way back from visit to Arizona where he had helped create American Indian reservations there. At that time plaza served not only as an unofficial public square but also acted as a ceremonial site for local government meetings apart from City Hall which took place at San Fernando Cathedral across town on Paseo del Norte Street which then continued south down Market Street before terminating at Recreativas Park adjacent to Interstate 10 just south of Alma Mater High School where McKinley College once stood Orlando Hernandez composed music specifically commissioned for this occasion entitled "Empresa Mexicana" or "Mexican Company" which theme proclaimed: "This page will always remember President McKinley when he rode into town hieroglyphicallyaccompanied by six white doves . . .
