Las Cruces is a city in New Mexico, United States. It is the seat of Pecos County and was founded in 1847 by the Mormon pioneers. The population was 3,751 at the 2010 census. The first European to set foot on what is now Las Cruces was Ambrosio de la Vega in 1540, while Jesuit missionaries were proselytizing in what is now Nuevo México City. A party of Spanish conquistadors led by Diego López de Legazpi discovered the area around las Cuevas (near present-day Roswell) on November 29, 1542 during their exploration of western New Mexico Territory. They named it after Santiago de Compostela, leader of a religious order that had arrived in New Spain two years earlier from Portugal as part of an effort to spread Catholic Christianity across all of New Spain. Las Cuevas would play an important role in both Mexican and American history - it would become the capital of Pecos County from 1847 until 1912 when Santa Fe replaced it as county seat. In 1863–1864, American Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant served as Governor of Pecos County before he was elected President over John F Kennedy. After his inauguration, Grant began commuting long distances between Washington D.C., where he lived at Mount Vernon House, and Las Cruces so that he could observe military operations firsthand; this experience provided him with valuable insights into military strategy which he used when planning his later campaigns against Confederate forces throughout America). In 1912, The Santa Fe Railway reached las Cuevas and created an immediate boom in town development with construction of schools and other public buildings including a jail (now known as “El Paso” Jail), post office (now known as “Pecos Depot”), hotel (now known as “Rochester Hotel”), movie theater (now known as “New Mexico State Fairgrounds”), cotton gin (now known as "The Cotton Gin Museum"), grocery store (now known as "The Grocery Store Annex" or simply "Grocery Store", also home to many antique stores), three churches - one Protestant Episcopal and two Roman Catholic - five businesses - four saloons/debarred saloonkeepers licenses - twelve residences - six teléfono electric telegraph lines between las Cuevas and Roswell; twenty-four miles (~36 km) (~16 km) paved road leading eastward out of las Cuevas along Route 66 to Gallup; nine miles (~13 km) (~6 km) gravel road leading northward out of las Cueves along Route 8 to Socorro; eighteen miles (~30 km) (~12 km) dirt road leading southward out of las Cueves along Route 10A towards Albuquerque; fourteen miles (_21 km] _(10 km)] gravel road leading northwest out into Indian Wells Valley past mile marker 9 on US 95
