Las Cruces, New Mexico is a small city located in the central part of the U.S. state of New Mexico. The population was 46,868 at the 2010 census, making it the fifteenth-largest city in New Mexico and its second-smallest after Santa Fe. Las Cruces' location on the San Miguel River makes it an agricultural center for many products such as eggs, milk, wheat, corn and potatoes; as well as a manufacturing center for garments and plastics. It is also home to Western Regional Medical Center (WRMC), one of three regional medical centers in New Mexico that serve all of northern Albuquerque and western southern Lubbock counties. WRMC was founded in 1966 and has about 1,500 employees providing care for patients from Albuquerque to paintshop town of Socorro and Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Las Cruces was laid out by Spanish colonists in 1693 on what is now called Rancho Ruidoso de la Fonseca east of present day Las Cruces. The original name for the area was "Taos" because there were numerous Taos Pueblos scattered around this region including Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Pueblos which had been under Spanish dominion since 1540 AD when Hernando de Soto discovered new lands west of Mexico City that later became known as New Spain. In 1847 Mexican land grants were made to American citizens who had helped build this country during its early years including James Wickersham who purchased 2 million acres (1 km²) east of present day Las Crucs along with other land grants near downtown Tucson Arizona Territory where he built his mansion today's Arizonan Museum AXA Private Equity AIG . Wickersham named his rancho Ruidoso de las Animas after two nearby mountains peak Ruidoso Peak (2729 ft / 810 m) & Rueda Peak (2613 ft / 735 m). It wasn't until 1872 when surveyors marked off sections within what are now las cruces township boundaries when they realized that these areas would form an easily accessible water crossing over the San Miguel River so they named their platte d'argent river "Ruidoso." When cattle drives began crossing the river some settlers decided to move from east to west across what is now downtown las cruces towards Abiquiu Colorado Territory but most opted for property located north/northwest of downtown between Rio Grande Street & Academy Avenue just beyond Union Cemetery . The first store opened up on Broadway near Rio Grande Street in 1879 by Lorenzo Baca who operated it until 1903 before moving out into his own garage next door on Academy Avenue which served as a soap factory until 1906 when it burned down leaving Baca stranded with nothing but socks to wear.. Today you can find a few modest storefronts remaining along Academy Avenue 5th St NW between Rio Grande Street & Broadway while south Capitol Mall will be undergoing redevelopment soon with high rises housing more than 100 businesses including several anchor stores anchored by Macy's Menard's Home Hardware Stevenage department store Stein Mart Grocery Outlet
