Las Cruces is a city in New Mexico, United States. The population was 713 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sedgwick County. The name "Las Cruces" is Spanish for "The Crossroads." The first settlement in what would become Las Cruces was made on April 12, 1835 by Father José de Jesús Chávez and his family as part of Rancho San Miguelito. In 1856, General Antonio López Bonilla founded Rinconada del Rio Grande and named it Las Cruces after himself. On January 1, 1912, President Theodore Roosevelt designated Las Cruces as the capital of New Mexico to be concurrent with Santa Fe. On December 14 of that year, he signed Executive Order No. 9887 which established the Office of New Mexico's Deputy Secretary of Finance and Administration in downtown Las Crucs until 1913 when it was moved to Santa Fe under Governor Ernesto Carrillo Peralta. The City Council then passed an ordinance designating November 6th as National Signing Day to commemorate this event. She later pleaded guilty and served 10 months in prison before being released on probation. -In 2000, an American man was arrested after trying to buy two handguns from someone who identified himself as the owner of a magazine containing 500 rounds of ammunition that would be legal under federal law. The weapon in question belonged to another individual and had been reported lost by its owner days earlier.
