The town's first gun store opened in 1824, and it continued to exist until around 1870. In that time, the town had a number of different industries including cattle ranching, lumber milling, and oil production. Las Cruces is a small city in New Mexico, located on the banks of the Rio Grande. The population was over 25,000 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque-Municipality, which has a total area of 121 square miles. Las Cruces had an estimated population of over 100,000 in 2008 and 110,000 by 2012. The downtown core is home to many businesses and services and features a large convention center as well as a number of smaller nightlife venues. The origins of Las Cruces date back to 1847 when Frenchmen named it Lacs de la Cruz after one of their rivers that emptied into the river near present-day downtown Las Cruces. A post office was established in 1851, and growth accelerated during the late 19th century when irrigation began eastward from Santa Fe through what is now Albuquerque and then south to Las Cruces (then called Alburquerque). In 1907 modest beginnings were made with the founding of one elementary school and two churches; by 1912 there were nine public schools serving las cruzes citizens including six high schools (four for boys and four for girls), three libraries, five clinics, twelve hotels/motels, twelve stores/, fifty five farms/laboratories/, seventy two residences., ninety six businesses/. By 1926 there were twenty four institutions serving las cruzes citizens including thirteen high schools (eleven boys only), eleven libraries (), ten clinics(), fifteen grocery stores/,nineteen restaurants/, thirty two businesses/. In 1944 construction began on what would become known as "the golden age" of las cruzes development with creation of Housing Authority buildings such as Market Place Towers (), Wells Fargo Building ()and United States Post Office (). This period coincided with increased agricultural production due to new irrigation techniques developed during World War II . The current form Of lasCruces commenced following passage by New Mexico State Legislature in 1959 known as "The Budget Bill". Known as The Tax Bill it proposed increasing sales taxes from 3% to 6%. Prior thereto local businessmen had been meeting weeklynightlyto discuss issues thereof since early 1909 however no action had taken place until finally becoming law on October 1st 1959 having passed previous legislative sessions sans debate or opposition from Governor Anaconda Pappas who erroneously believed that state government could not constitutionally increase taxes without prior approval from neighboring Texas! The measure failed handily 64-38 but spawned off subsequent attempts throughout 1960s thru 1970s culminating finally with passage by New Mexico State Legislature in 1978 known as "The Tax Reform Bill" which repealed all statewide sales taxes except those imposed on cigarettes! This bill caused great outcry within los cruzes community because amongst other things it eliminated revenues generatedfrom state liquor laws while also creating vast new tax liabilities for kitty litter manufacturers etc…. needless to say this measure generated intense partisan political battle resulting ultimately in victory for Republican gubernatorial candidate Norm Coleman who became first ever Native American governorof New Mexico
