Las Cruces is a city in New Mexico, United States. It is the county seat of Santa Cruz County and part of the Albuquerque-Municipality. The population was 82,824 at the 2010 census. The city was founded on July 16, 1881 by brothers Lorenzo and Francisco Garcia as Fruita de la Vega (Fruita meaning "fruit" and Vega de la Vega, meaning "place of the Garcia brothers"), named for José Manuel García Ponce de León who had settled in what is now Santa Fe in 1795. The first gun light service in Las Cruces began on October 14, 1892 when A.P. Brown & Son opened its store on Second Street between High and Main Streets. At that time there were only twogunsmiths in town and they did all the gun work themselves. In 1896 J Fenton opened his business at 406 2nd Street which became famous for its H&R Model 7 revolvers which it continued to sell until 1978 when it was replaced by FN Herstal handguns In 1903 A P Brown & Sons merged with National Firearms Company to form National Firearms Corporation (NFC). NFC then sold their revolver business to Colt Industries in 1912, becoming Colt Arms Corporation (CAC). After World War I ended, NFC produced rifles under license from Remington Arms Company US while Remington Products continued manufacturing shotguns through their own company until 1977 . After years of production cuts at NPC due to competitive pressure from foreign manufacturers, Remington finally closed down their Las Cruces plant effective January 1st 1979 after over fifty years of operations There are still remnants of both plants today including aRemington shotgun factory tour open to visitors every Saturday morning from 9am-1pm

The first European to visit Las Cruces was José de Armas on July 3, 1764, during his march from Santa Fe to Roswell, New Mexico. In 1846 Las Cruces was founded as a trading post on what is now known as Commerce Street by General Antonio Armijo and Captain Fernando Romero y Salazar. In 1865 Las Cruces became part of the Mexican state of Taos. On November 15 of that year it was captured by Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Battle of El Paso and later incorporated into the Union forces under General George A. McClellan as part of his campaign against Confederate General Robert Easley in 1866. In 1881 Las Cruces passed through an act Congress called the McKinley Act which granted voting rights to all citizens regardless of color or national origin within two years after they become citizens—a process that continues to this day (March 29th). After passage of this act Las cruces quickly became one of America’s most diverse cities with people from many countries living and working here together in equal fashion until recent times when diversity has again decreased among residents due to gentrification trends happening throughout much downtown area including schools operated by predominantly white private schools; though there are efforts underway for change including OBgyn care being offeredat least partially free through clinics set up throughout downtown area) . The two cities merged into one municipality in 1893. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, much progress was made in developingLas Cruces economy including the development of oil production beginning in 1907. during World War II much manufacturing took place including aircraft construction at nearby Roswell Army Air Field which led to increased business activity that helped support downtown redevelopment over time
