Las Cruces is a city in New Mexico, United States. The population was 31,575 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Santa Fe County and home to the Las Cruces Military Academy. The first Europeans to visit what is now New Mexico were Franciscan missionaries in 1540. The area that became Las Cruces was granted by Governor Manuel Antonio de Torres to Francisco Vásquez de Coronado on November 14, 1606 as part of Rancho Santa Fe de las Animas Grant. In 1881,las Cruces was platted as a town with a population of 511 people. On July 16 of that year – just one day after Mexican president Porfirio Díaz announced his intention to pardon all Americans who had served in Mexicos during the Mexican Revolution – Mayor James Kellar purchased 640 acres (2 km²) along Rio Grande Street east of present-day First Avenue for $5 per acre ($100 per hectare). With its own water system and railroad station minutes away from downtown Las Cruces, it quickly grew into one of the most important towns in New Mexico—and one of America’s wealthiest cities; today it has more than 30 thousand residents.
