Las Cruces is a city in New Mexico and the county seat of Nuevo México County. The population was 83,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque-Santa Fe-Chihuahua Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2013, Las Cruces had the second largest Hispanic population in New Mexico after Santa Fe. The area that would become Las Cruces was settled by successive waves of Native Americans between 4,000 and 10,000 years ago according to archeological evidence. A small Village called Viejo de las Abejas was established on April 16th, 1847 by Nicolas Ortega and José Antonio Romero as part of Rancho San Buenaventura which included present day Albuquerque and parts of northern Otero County. Las Cruces was founded on February 28th, 1881 when Pascual González donated 350 acres (160 ha) northeast of what is now downtown Las Cruces to be the new county seat for Nuevo México County with land east from Rio Grande being given to Montezuma Creek Township for cattle farming purposes only. The first post office opened in October 1881 under name “Albuquerque” with Patricio Carrera as its first Postmaster. The town's origins can be traced back even further to 1796 when Don Jose Ortiz granted two square miles (5 km²) along the Rio Grande to Juan Bautista Sánchez in order to establish a military barracks; it became known as "Las Aguas Blancas" or White Wells due to this issue being one of many giveaways made during Mexican independence celebrations honoring General Agustín de Asís y Costilla whose forces had liberated Los Angeles from Spain less than three months earlier. In 1887 both Albuquerque and Las Vegas were platted adjacent to what is now Downtown Las Cruces but because they lay within Spanish territory they were not considered towns until 1912 when they were annexed into Nuevo México County as part of an effort led by Governor Manuel Micheltorena To increase voter turnout in elections he felt were needed for statehood negotiations which were about to begin based on Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican–American War fifty-six days earlier; consequently all towns excepting las cruce got their own City charter effective July 1st 1912 despite objections from Mayor Francisco García who suggested incorporation into El Paso instead due primarily to his business interests there including importing goods from Chihuahua through his rancho Frontier Trading Company). On December 15th 1907 James Fenton organized a group called “Masonians” together with Wm Tompkins (a teacher), John Mason (owner/builder) and Cesar Chavez who soon became its leader after emigrating from California some time prior while still living at Villa Real near Tucson where he had been born on January 14th 1865; this group purchased 640 acres (250 ha) southeast of Town limits lot 11C which bordered upon today’s Plaza del Carmen shopping center site bounded by First Street NW & Park Avenue NE & Second Street SE – just southwest corner lot line between Two Rivers Boulevard & I-40 exit ramps off Interstate 40 - forming today’s core urban area south/southwest corner lot line between Stadium Drive NW & Main Street NE before north/northeast corner lots lines those roads across US 75 concurrent with those roads running east/west along I-40 corridor formerlyowned by Pemex oil refinery property currently occupied by Occidental Petroleum Corporation having leased it from EOG Resources Incorporated since 1984). A year later a post office was established in downtown Las Cruces with Hiram Bingham as its first mail carrier. In 1861 Pecos County was created from part of Arizona Territory including southeastern New Mexico and included much of present-day las cruzes vicinity including las cruz square (now part of downtown). On February 14, 1865 Pecos County residents voted not to secede from New Mexico due to ongoing political tension over slavery in Texas & civil war matters in Arizona Territory On October 12th 1860 US Cavalry Colonel John Gibbons arrived atTanahumara Point campground following a march from Fort Sumner via Santa Fe River Valley necessitating passage through las cruz square after seeing indications Mount Rushmore had been disturbed by Indians during hostilities along Zuni border The area now known as DowntownLas Cruces grew rapidly during this time with new bars/restaurants/petsitting businesses opening up all around tanahumara point such as: Topeka Cafe (1934), Bebe’s Cabaret (1936), El Floridita(?). By 1938 there were more than 20 businesses active near tanahumara point . . . many still standing today! DowntownLas Cruces experienced rapid growth during World War II with munitions factories expanding nearby like Alcan mine producing aluminum cans then Allied Signalproducing electronic equipment; textiles being manufactured at Montgomery Ward; chemical plants producing rubber products; steel mills manufacturing artillery pieces etc., creating one large industrial district near la cruce square complete with schools/employment centers/nightlife
