Las Cruces is a city in New Mexico, United States. The population was 31,652 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in and the county seat of Santa Fe County. The name "Las Cruces" comes from Spanish meaning "the crossroads." The town was founded by Spaniards in 1763 as part of Rancho de las Animas. The early days of Las Cruces were difficult for the Gadsden family. Their rancho included what is now downtown Las Cruces and parts of present-day Santa Fe Springs and Roswell Park neighborhoods. In 1847, Fernando Gadsden sold his holdings to a group of American businessmen led by George Bird Griggs who named their company Las Vegas Club Company. Las Vegas Club Company built a large casino which became one of America's leading gambling capitals during the late 19th century before it went bankrupt in 1907. In 1868, Los Alamos National Laboratory was established in nearby Alamosa by General Alfred Waddell and chemist Willis Osmond with help from Senator James Acheson. By 1901, about 40% of Albuquerque's economy was based on agriculture and citrus production; however, this declined after World War I when prizefighting replaced farming as the main industry. After Albuquerque lost its status as capital following passage of New Mexico Statehood laws in 1912, Las Cruces gained prominence as an economic center due to its location near both national laboratories and other major technology centers like Ford Motor Company and General Electric Corporation (GE). According to 2005 Census data, nearly 60% of all workers commuting into Albuquerque are employed within 5 miles (8 km) of downtown Las Cruces; this compares to only 10% who commute into Albuquerque outside 5 miles (8 km). Las cruzes growth has been largely due to its location as an agricultural center surrounded by technological giants such as GEICO Insurance Co., Microsoft Corp., Intel Corp., Macy's Incorporated and AT&T Incorporated among others over the past several decades while still maintaining much rural character with sizable cattle operations until recently still remains today
