Las Cruces is a small town in New Mexico, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. On October 14th, 1846 las cruces became an important stop on Army General Antonio López de Santa Anna's march northward towards Baja California Peninsula. American soldiers destroyed many local homes and businesses before capturing las cruce on October 19th; however Villa managed to escape into neighboring Chihuahua province unharmed. Las Cruces experienced heavy military activity throughout most of its history; during World War II it served as headquarters for Major General Leslie Rufus Power's 5th Army Group which pushed eastward along Interstate 10 from Albuquerque through Gallup and then south to San Miguel de Allende before returning northeast across I-10 to Las Vegas where they were again stopped at Taos Mesa near present-day Roswell; Power's army then retreated northwest across I-25 and rejoined Interstate 10 near Gallup eventually reaching his destination without any combat or damage done to either side. On November 25th 1912 issue (pages 9-10) of Cosmopolitan Magazine featured a sketch called "Downtown," executed by artist Harry Smith depicting downtown Las Crucs with its six tall towers housing civic services such as banks, churches, post office and jail—all within view of Paseo del Rio Viejo (River Walk). This drawing helped spur development around today's plaza including numerous stores and restaurants that have followed since then while also preserving some older buildings still extant today like El Rancho Grande hotel which until recently housedel gerente general de la mesa airiana y la Telefónica Mexicana building next door currently used as apartments Andalusian restaurant called Goya located across from Mayo Clinic dental offices etc.—an early example suburban growth pattern common throughout much Southern New Mexico prior to statehood circa 1912 which can be seen even today albeit with increased density around Downtown area experiencing significant gentrification due street numbering etc.—one reason why current zoning laws allow much more high density development than formerly allowed primarily because infrastructure has been built up around Downtown area instead of replacement/updating needed roads etc.—in short: Downtown Las Crucs remains an oasis surrounded only by dense urban sprawl

In 1828 Spanish settlers founded what would become Las Cruces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna; they named it San Miguel de Allende after General Montero's army destroyed San Miguel en route from Manila to Los Angeles during Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1849 United States citizens established a town called Grantsville because nearby Rancho Santa Fe had been given to John Grant by Mexican Governor Alvarado Castro on October 15th of that year in exchange for land grants granted by President Polk in December 1845.. Las Cruces grew rapidly due to military contracts with El Paso Arsenal and other defense projects during World War I; however, when peace returned there were no new munitions production plants built until after World War II. The post-war boom began with an influx of engineers who designed new types of tanks and aircraft; these young engineers helped create what are now some of downtown Las Cruces' most well-known landmarks including Ford Motor Company Building (1947), Plaza de Mayo (1948), Southern Pacific Railroad Station (1951), Brookings Institution (1957), American Institute for Architects building (1974) and Hoover Dam Administration Building (1983). During economic recession times from 2001 through 2006 there were reports that crime rates had increased although this has not been substantiated; nonetheless police activity targeting gangs or organized crime decreased over time as law enforcement resources became more focused on counterterrorism activities such as Operation Wetback which targeted undocumented immigrants living near highways..
