Hobbs is a town in Doña Ana County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 707 at the 2010 census. The original name of the town was "Dixon", but it was changed in 1885 to Hobbs because of its proximity to Dixon, Arizona. The current name is derived from John B. Hobbs, who founded the town in 1865 and served as its first mayor. The townsite within present-day Hobbs was given to the community by pioneer John B. Hobbs when he built his ranch there in 1865. According to legend, Hobbs donated land for a school and depot near today's intersection of U.S. Route 66 and NM State Road 611 in what is now known as Dixon Township; however, this story may be apocryphal or false. In any case, the donation helped make HobBS an important center for early settlers in that area and fostered its role as a commercial center until after World War II when other communities took over that role. According to the 2010 census, 707 people lived in Hobbstown proper; 579 residents lived on adjoining ranches/villages while 83 citizens resided outside of town limits on various military installations throughout Doña Ana County (these numbers do not include those living on military bases inside or outside of New Mexico). With limited development opportunities within town limits since most landowners refused subdivision requests due to their concerns about loss of privacy or potential developments that could infringe upon their grazing rights, many residents have chosen instead to live scattered around rural properties surrounding town - including some located more than 50 miles from downtown! Today hobbits continue to operate much like their ancestor did with cattle drives conducted both during summer months (when milk prices are highest) and winter months (when prices are lowest).
