In 1916, the town of Hobbs, New Mexico was boomtown with over 2,000 people. The town's Main Street was full of businesses and residences. A new gunsmith shop opened up in the town and soon there were many firearms being made in Hobbs. In the early 1920s, a new rifle company called Winchester Arms arrived in Hobbs and started making rifles and shotguns. In 1923, the townsfolk voted to name their street after Winchester Arms founder Sam Houston Winchester. The factory continued to produce guns until 1955 when it closed down due to competition fromGeneral Dynamics Corporation's Jericho Firearms Factory in nearby Alamogordo. The final product of this gun manufacturing dynasty is still being produced today by a small family-owned business that has been located in Hobbs since 1936: Winchester Repeating Arms Company (WRA). Today WRA produces handguns as well as rifles and shotguns for both law enforcement officers and target shooters around the world.

The Hobbs, New Mexico gun case history dates back to the 1800s. The first settlers in this area settled on the current site of Hobbs in 1820. As time passed, more and more people moved into this region and began buying and using firearms. One of the earliest cases to occur in Hobbs was a shooting incident that took place on January 15, 1864. A group of men were deer hunting when they came across an animal that they didn’t want to kill. Instead, they decided to shoot it instead. One of the men got hold of a rifle and opened fire on the animal, wounding it fatally. This event led to a change in policy at the local sheriff’s office and from then on, hunters were allowed to use rifles while deer hunting. Many different types of firearms were used during these early years in Hobbs. Shotguns, pistols, rifles and shotguns all played their part in this community as people accustomed themselves to using these weapons for target practice or self-defense purposes. In 1881, one man decided to start a grocery business in town and started selling guns along with his grocery store items. This sparked off another round of firearm sales activity in town which continued until 1906 when prohibition became effective throughout most of America. At this time, handgun sales stopped completely within town limits as individuals had no choice but to purchase firearms illegally either through smugglers or from out-of-state dealers
Hobbs, New Mexico is a small town located in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas metropolitan area. The name "Hobbs" means "place where heaps of stones are found." The first settlers in this area were Spanish noblemen who named their property after one of their friends, John Hobbes. In 1834, the United States bought land around modern-day Hobbs from José María Hidalgo and sold it to David Baca. The town started as a little settlement on a ranch belonging to David Baca and his wife Elvira. After several years, Baca decided to move the town closer to his ranch so that everyone could get food and shelter. He built three buildings: a schoolhouse, an inn, and a store. The first post office was established in 1868. He also founded two churches: Our Lady of the Assumption (1868) and Sts Peter & Paul (1875). This led to many people coming to Hobbs for religious reasons: they needed help getting food or medicine when they were sick or wanted counseling; they wanted to find work; or they just wanted some peace and quiet away from all the hustle and bustle of cities like Mexico City or Monterrey. In 1932, William Hickey moved into Hobbs from nearby Ciudad Juárez with his family after working for General Motors in Detroit for six years during which time he had learned English as well as Mexican Spanish while living in Ciudad Juárez. Over time many others followed suit until by 1990 there were over 150 people living in Hobbs alone including 90% Native American descent! Today there are still quite a few Hispanic immigrants living here although most now reside within Mexico City or other large metropolises due to job opportunities here or better economic prospects outside those Cities/Metros compared with what has been available back then! Many people here remember how things used to be before NAFTA made it much harder for them economically - even if they don't quite understand why things have changed! Despite these challenges though life goes on pretty much unchanged - despite all those 'Chicano' jokes that circulate around here at times ;)

Fenton Little in 1877. In 1907, Hobbs incorporated as a village and lost its status as a town until 1954 when it became an incorporated municipality with voting rights and an annual budget of $5,000. The name "Hobbs" comes from the Apache word "yobbo," meaning "a place where there are no waterholes." In 1916, A. Dilla Hobbs founded the Dobson Service Company which provided day labor for farmers in Gallup and other areas of New Mexico. The company ceased operations after only two years because of competition from tractor companies established by ranchers near Las Cruces. In 1922, Hobert Swayze opened what would become his new grocery store which soon became one of the most popular businesses in town with its large selection of groceries and local produce
Hobbs was founded in 1869 by J.P. Hobbs and his brother-in-law, W.T. Gentry, as a small agricultural town on the edge of the then new county of Grant County. The first store was built in 1871, and within a few years there were also several churches, schools and businesses. By 1870, Hobbs had become an important local trading center with its own post office and mail service. In 1872, the Hobbs brothers erected the first schoolhouse in Grants County; it served as both a public school and home to the county's first court room. The early years of Hobbs were difficult for the townspeople because they lacked any major means of support other than their agriculture skills and limited resources. However, progress was made during the late 1800s when hobbits began to develop some significant commerce and industry including lumbering, mining and cattle ranching; these endeavors helped to bring more prosperity to townspeople throughout the 20th century. In 1938, Hobbs became part of New Mexico Statehood when it was admitted into that state as a result of Amendments IV & V of the New Mexico Constitution; since then it has seen continuous growth with many new businesses being established along with continued development in terms of education, research and tourism opportunities
