Hobbs, New Mexico is a small town in the San Juan County seat of Lincoln. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of the Rio Grande and its name derives from Francis Hobbs, who settled there in 1869. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hobbs were Spanish traders travelling upriver from Mexico City. They noted the high Rockies and riverbanks to the south and came up with the idea of creating a trading post on these grounds where they could trade goods for fur or other minerals that would be carried downriver by water to trading posts farther north. A post was established at what is now Hobbs in 1871, and by 1875 it had grown into a town with a full-time military garrison. In 1902, however, gold discovery along the riversoil field near today's Silver City led to an increased demand for goods brought downriver by steamboats. This led to another enlargement of Hobbs; original boundaries included only parts of present-day Lincoln and Douglas Counties but extended westward into Webb County as well as northward into Grant County. Today hobbits continue their history as one of New Mexico’s smallest towns - though their location within San Juan County makes them quite visible to people living outside their boundaries (e.g., rivals who drive through Hutchinson). Their economy depends heavily on agriculture which grows corn, beans, squash, cottonseed oil and other products exported throughout New Mexico Census data reveals that nearly half (44%) of all households earn less than $30 per week while almost one-third (31%) live below poverty lines; persistent social problems such as crime and teen pregnancy are also major concerns for many residents . The town of Hobbs, New Mexico was founded by a group of Mormons in 1867. The community was located on the east bank of the Rio Grande in what is now southern New Mexico.
