Hobbs is a town in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settlers in what is now Hobbs were the Hidatsa Indians who arrived in 1827. They built their own village on an island in the Rio Grande and named it after one of their chiefs, Hobbs. A post office was established at Hobbs in 1847, and a store was opened by J.A. Pennington in 1851. The settlement grew rapidly due to agriculture and cattle ranching, with a school opening in 1870 and a railroad being constructed through the area in 1893. By 1910, there were 3 businesses operating within the community: 2 stores and one hotel/motel. In 1923, all residents of Hobbs voted to secede from Bernalillo County because they felt that county government was too centralized and inefficient. The town kept its own elected officials until 1931 when Bernalillo County became fully state-run under New Mexico Statehood Act of 1912. The last local government official resigned on July 1st of that year as part of this change.
