Hobbs, New Mexico is a small town in Doña Ana County, New Mexico. It was founded by John A. Hobbs in 1859. The post office at Hobbs was established in 1865 and named for him. The community has a population of approximately 1,100 people as of the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Hobbs was Johnathon Hightower, who arrived with his family in 1859 and platted the area that became Hobbs. The Hightowers were the first white settlers to live in what is now Doña Ana County. From this location, John A. Hobbs began to develop what would become his trading post and ranching operation on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1872, he sold his holdings to Mariano Castro for $10,000 cash plus 10% of any profits generated from their venture together. Mariano Castro donated land to build a school near what is now the center of town; construction started in 1875 but only ended up lasting five years due to financial difficulties caused by SpanishAmerican War hostilities and Native American attacks on white settlements east of the Rio Grande River.
